On January 24, 2002, a former University of Oklahoma Ph.D. student ended up in jail.  An unlawful arrest came as a result of retaliation for an academic dispute he had with a group of professors at Economics Department.  James Hartigan and Timothy Dunne accused the student of having plotted to assassinate several professors and having attempted to acquire a gun from a Japanese professor.

What this story makes so bizarre is that they accused the student of having asked a Japanese professor to acquire a gun.  But they don't know who this Japanese professor is.  In addition, a gun was never found in his apartment.
